Jubba Airways has resumed flights to Garowe, the capital of Puntland, as the Somali airline moves to rebuild its operations in the country and strengthen its presence in the region, including Bosaso.

The airline restarted its Garowe service on Tuesday, October 27, introducing a regular weekly flight that will operate every Tuesday. The resumption marks another step in the company’s return to Somalia’s aviation market after announcing its comeback in September 2026.

The relaunch was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Garowe attended by Jubba Airways staff, officials from the Puntland administration, traditional elders and residents.

Speaking during the ceremony, Jubba Airways manager Said Jeesan said the airline had a long history of serving Puntland and other parts of Somalia before suspending its regional operations.

“Jubba Airways operated in the region from 2002 to 2019, at a time when it was the only airline connecting the country,” Jeesan said.

He recalled that the airline served several Somali cities before major airport infrastructure was developed, including Bosaso, Garowe, Galkayo and Qardho.

According to Jeesan, Jubba Airways operated at airports in these locations before their runways and terminal buildings were constructed. He also said the airline played a role in encouraging the use of larger aircraft at Bosaso Airport after its development.

“The relaunch will be just as people knew us before, and even better, God willing. We want to operate seriously in both Garowe and Bosaso,” he said.

Jubba Airways eyes Garowe and Bosaso

The airline’s renewed focus on Garowe and Bosaso signals its intention to rebuild its presence in Puntland, where it previously operated for nearly two decades.

The two cities are important destinations in the region, and the resumption of flights offers travellers another option for air transport. However, the company has so far announced a weekly schedule for Garowe, with flights operating on Tuesdays.

Jubba Airways’ plans for Bosaso will be closely watched as the airline works to restore its network and re-establish its position in Somalia’s aviation sector.

The company, founded in 1998, has a history of connecting Somalia with regional and international destinations. Its first flight was a direct service from Sharjah to Mogadishu, the first of its kind since the state-owned Somali Airlines ceased operations in 1991.

Headquartered in Nairobi, Jubba Airways has branches in Somalia, Djibouti, Uganda, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The company says it employs more than 300 people.

According to the airline’s website, its listed domestic destinations in Somalia include Mogadishu, Hargeisa, Bosaso, Galkayo, Garowe, Guriel, Adado, Baidoa and Kismayo.

Its international destinations include Nairobi, Djibouti, Jeddah and Dubai.
