Somalia’s Under-17 national football team has secured a place in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations after defeating tournament hosts Rwanda 5-4 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in their CECAFA U-17 Championship semi-final in Kigali.
The victory on Saturday, October 17, delivered a double achievement for the young Somali side, which advanced to the regional tournament’s final while also booking its ticket to the continental competition.
Somalia showed resilience after falling behind in the second half at Kigali Pele Stadium, responding through Mohamud Osman before holding their opponents at bay for the remainder of normal time. With neither team able to find a decisive goal, the semi-final was settled from the penalty spot, where Somalia emerged victorious.
The result ended Rwanda’s hopes of reaching the final on home soil and sent Somalia through to face Uganda, who had already secured qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
Mohamud Osman Leads Somalia’s Response
The semi-final had remained goalless at half-time, with both teams needing a breakthrough to take control of the contest.
Rwanda eventually broke the deadlock through substitute Patrick Ujeneza in the second half, putting the hosts in front and placing pressure on the Somali team to respond.
Somalia did not take long to restore parity. Four minutes after conceding, Mohamud Osman produced an individual attacking move, dribbling past Rwanda’s defenders before finding the equaliser.
His goal brought Somalia back into the contest and ensured the match remained finely balanced as the two sides searched for a winner.
Neither team managed to settle the contest during the remaining minutes, forcing the semi-final into a penalty shootout. Somalia held their nerve to win 5-4, completing a victory that secured both a place in the CECAFA final and qualification for the continental tournament.
Somalia Coach Praises Players’ Mental Strength
Somalia head coach Dadir Amin Ali praised his players for remaining focused after conceding, highlighting their response as a key factor in reaching the final.
The coach said the team had recovered well from Rwanda’s goal and maintained its concentration to prevail in the shootout.
“I am very happy that my players stayed focused, recovered after conceding the opening goal and went on to win the penalty shootout. We will now prepare for the final against a strong Uganda team,” Dadir said.
His remarks reflected the importance of the team’s response after falling behind in a high-stakes semi-final, where another goal for Rwanda could have put Somalia’s qualification hopes in serious danger.

The victory also gives the coaching staff an opportunity to prepare for the final with continental qualification already secured, although the team will still be seeking to finish the regional tournament by lifting the trophy.
Qualification for the 2027 CAF Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations represents a major milestone for Somalia’s young footballers, providing them with an opportunity to compete against some of the continent’s leading youth teams.
Somalia will join Uganda at the continental tournament after the latter had already secured its place. The two teams will now meet in the CECAFA final, giving Somalia an opportunity to pursue regional silverware after confirming its AFCON qualification.
Somalia’s Ministry of Youth and Sports described the semi-final victory as historic, noting that the national team had reached the CECAFA U-17 final for the second time in four years.
The ministry pointed to Somalia’s triumph in the 2022 edition as a milestone for the country’s youth football programme and expressed hope that the current squad could repeat that success.
