Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has apologised after publicly criticising the club’s leadership following their 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid, bringing an explosive confrontation with senior officials into focus.

The Argentina international expressed frustration over what he considered insufficient investment in Manchester United’s squad during the summer transfer window, directing criticism at the club’s leadership and singling out technical director Jason Wilcox.

However, on Thursday, October 15, Martinez met senior club officials, including Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada, alongside head coach Michael Carrick, in discussions about his remarks.

The meeting came two days after United’s defeat in Spain, which prompted the defender to question the decisions being made behind the scenes at Old Trafford.

In a statement issued on Thursday evening, Martinez acknowledged that his frustration after the match had led him to express his views at an inappropriate time and in the wrong setting, prompting him to apologise.

“Everyone knows that I am a passionate person and that I live football with great intensity,” Martinez said.

“The frustration of the defeat led me to express how I felt at a time and place that perhaps were not the right ones, and for that I want to apologise,” he added.

The defender also acknowledged that his public criticism risked undermining unity within Manchester United at a time when the club was seeking to move forward from the defeat.

“Our club is at its best when we are all united, and I recognise that my words in that moment did not help with that,” Martinez said.

He added that he recognised the efforts of those working at the club to deliver success and insisted that attention should now return to performances on the pitch.

“I know that every single person at Manchester United is doing everything possible to achieve our shared ambition: bringing the success that this club and its supporters deserve,” he said.

“With this situation now behind us, we are fully focused on winning together,” Martinez added.

His apology marked a change from his initial response on Wednesday, when he issued a statement clarifying his comments but stopped short of apologising.

According to Sky Sports News, the decision to issue the apology publicly came from Martinez himself. The broadcaster also reported that the defender had been fined, although the club had not publicly confirmed the details of any disciplinary action.

What Triggered the Fallout?

The controversy followed United’s 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday, October 13.

Rather than limiting his response to the team’s performance, Martinez turned his attention to the club’s decision-making, arguing that he had expected more from the leadership over investment in the squad.

His remarks brought the club’s summer transfer strategy into the spotlight and raised questions about the relationship between players and those responsible for shaping the team.

Wilcox, whom Martinez singled out, is Manchester United’s technical director. His role places him among the senior figures involved in the club’s football operations and longer-term squad planning.

Berrada, meanwhile, serves as chief executive, while Carrick is responsible for coaching the first team.

The presence of all three figures at the meeting underlined the importance of addressing the situation, although the precise details of their discussions have not been made public.
