Puntland has deployed additional security forces to Qardho after deadly clashes left three people dead and eight others injured, raising tensions in the northeastern Somali town as the circumstances surrounding the violence remain unclear.

The reinforcements were dispatched from Garowe, Puntland’s administrative capital, as the situation in Qardho, the capital of the Karkaar region, remained tense following the violence on Thursday afternoon, October 15, 2026.

According to a report by Puntland Post, the casualties included two civilians, one of them a woman, and a member of Puntland’s security forces. Eight other people, most of them civilians, sustained injuries and were taken to Qardho General Hospital for treatment.

The deployment signals a heightened security response by the Puntland authorities as they seek to contain the situation. However, officials had not publicly explained what triggered the clashes or identified those involved at the time of the report.

The deaths of two civilians have added to the gravity of the incident, with a woman among those reported killed. The third fatality was a Puntland security officer, according to information obtained by Puntland Post.

Eight injured people were receiving medical attention at Qardho General Hospital. The report did not provide further details about the severity of their injuries or indicate whether any of them were in critical condition.

The available information also did not establish whether the deaths and injuries occurred in a single confrontation or during several incidents linked to the unrest.

With civilians accounting for most of the reported injuries, the violence has raised immediate concerns about the safety of residents as security forces move into the town.

Puntland Sends Forces From Garowe

The Puntland government responded by sending additional security personnel from Garowe to Qardho, where tensions remained high after the clashes.

The deployment comes as authorities face the immediate task of preventing further violence and restoring calm. However, the report did not disclose the number of personnel sent, the units involved or the specific security measures planned for the town.

It was also unclear whether the reinforcements had arrived and begun operations or whether further deployments were expected.

The movement of additional forces is the clearest official response described in the report, although Puntland’s government had not issued a detailed public explanation of the incident.

Local authorities in Qardho had not commented on the events that led to the deaths and injuries. Officials approached for information by Puntland Post also declined to speak about the matter.

As a result, the immediate cause of the clashes remained unknown.

The report did not establish whether the violence was linked to a political disagreement, a clan dispute, a confrontation involving security personnel or another incident. It would therefore be premature to attribute responsibility to any individual or group without further evidence.
