Farmaajo Sends Open Appeal to President Hassan Sheikh Amid Political Tensions

MOGADISHU, Somalia — September 24, 2026: Former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has issued an open letter to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, calling for national dialogue, political compromise and an inclusive agreement to address the country’s ongoing political challenges.

In the letter, Farmaajo said Somalia is facing a sensitive period marked by political, security, economic and social challenges, as well as broader geopolitical developments that he said could have significant implications for the country’s unity and stability.

Farmaajo said the current circumstances require political leaders to prioritize dialogue, compromise and consensus, arguing that political disputes should be addressed through negotiations rather than confrontation.

He identified four areas he considers essential to preserving national cohesion: the implementation of a constitution based on broad agreement; completion of the federal system; timely and inclusive elections; and the use of dialogue, compromise and political agreements to resolve disputes.

Farmaajo also expressed concern over political disagreements between the Federal Government and some federal member states, saying the situation requires urgent political engagement and a negotiated solution.

On elections, he called for an agreement on the electoral framework and urged political stakeholders to work toward an inclusive electoral process that could help end the current political uncertainty.

“To avoid foreign interference and decisions that do not come from Somalis, you must take the lead in a national dialogue based on genuine compromise,” Farmaajo said in the letter.

He further called for an inclusive election to be held within a short period, saying that an agreed political process was necessary to move the country beyond its current uncertainty.

The letter comes amid continuing political disagreements in Somalia over constitutional arrangements, elections, federal relations and the country’s broader political process.

Farmaajo signed the letter as the ninth President of the Federal Republic of Somalia and leader of the N&N political party.
